Rules for dumping fish in lake

Over the weekend, I saw a bass boat backing down the boat ramp. So I drove over to see who it was. When I got to the ramp, I discovered it was Patrick Gaides, LOK homeowner that lives across from the boat ramp. I asked him what he was up to and the answer was; "nothing to worry about, I'm just putting fish in the lake". I asked what kind and he said he was putting bass in the lake and that some day there would be more fisherman living here so he's making sure the lakes have plenty of bass to catch.

I was surprised I didn't know anything about what he was doing since I'm on the Lake Committee, Communications Committee and Ski Club. So I asked him if he had told anyone he was doing this? His answer was; "Why should I have to tell anyone? These are native fish and wouldn't hurt anything." I responded by saying that adding anything to the water without notifying the Lake Committee or someone on the BOD wasn't cool whether you think it's safe or not. The Lake Committee could be in the middle of a water quality study, or planning to put chemicals in that could affect the fish, or maybe planning to put more grass carp in and adding more fish could affect the amount of food available to the carp. They could be trying to fix a water quality issue that could now be tainted by his decision to do something on his own. A simple phone call to Joe Shea would be the most logical thing to do before adding anything to the water. Patrick's reply was a glaring stare as he proceeded to dump the fish in the water right in front of me.

My concern isn't as much the fish at this point, but the way one homeowner feels he has the rights to do whatever he wants without involving others in the neighborhood. I'm sure he'd feel different if someone showed up in his backyard and dumped their favorite fish, frog, snake, or whatever in his pool.

Outside of fish, what if a home owner doesn't like the color the Lake Committee dyed the water? Can someone now come out and dump his own dye in without any consequences from the HOA? If the water becomes muddy, or we have fish dying for unknown reasons, who's responsibility is it now? The rest of the homeowners or Patrick? The Lake Committee could end up chasing there tails trying to figure out a solution for a problem that pops up having no idea what might have caused it.

But I'm only one homeowner. What are other homeowner's thoughts on this? Should there be a rule in our bylaws that cover these types of actions?

Forum: Lake Committee Topics

Swimming at Lakes of Katy

Hi LOK Residents,
Some of you will have seen me and some fellow swimmers swimming on the North Mid Lake these past few months. Triathlon season was in full swing and I myself and several of our residents were involved in various events locally.
Swimming takes place on one lake only, the North Mid Lake. We use the red buoys that are anchored at each end of the island as our turn buoys and we try hard to swim at times when there is little to no boating or skiing activity. Apologies and sincere thanks to any boaters or skiers who may have moved over to another vacant lake while we have been swimming. Your consideration is truly very much appreciated.
Lest there be any confusion, as a competitive water skier myself (as well as several of our swimmers who are also residents and skiers, riders etc) we are fully aware that the swim activity has no right of way nor priority on the water. In the event that the North Mid Lake is the only place that you desire to ski, we only ask that you give us time to observe your approach and time to evacuate the lake as safely and speedily as possible.
Swimming is a wonderful activity for general fitness and Open Water Swimming is a totally different experience to that of swimming laps in a pool.
All residents are most welcome to come and join in. You may be a total beginner (as I was this time last year) or an accomplished pool swimmer. Either way, you are welcome. The beauty of this activity is that each person can do as little distance or as much as they chose. It's totally flexible. If you are a little nervous, remember that our lakes are not that deep and not that wide. Stay a little closer to the edges and you will find that you can easily put your feet down and stand, take a breather and then either continue or stop.
The water temperature at the moment (this note written on November 10) is at an average of 70*F which is refreshing and pleasant for swimming. You may take a little gasp on entry but once in motion, you soon warm up and get used to it.

Contact Gwen on : gwenmcfadden@comcast.net or call her at home on 832 295 9901 for more information and for swim times. We would love to see you join us on our beautiful lakes right here. With a little practice, you too can enjoy this very beneficial form of exercise, at no cost at all (forget the expensive gym memberships and the tedious drive to and fro), right here in your own back yard.

Forum: General Neighborhood Topics
